NEW YORK, N.Y. - Senior Victoria Strickland claimed victory in the 1,000 meters at the NYRR Saturday Night at the Armory and the University of Pennsylvania indoor women's track and field team placed third in its first meet of 2012.
Penn finished third among the 15 teams with 105.5 points. Fourth-place St. Peter's had just 56.5 points. Hampton was slightly ahead of the Quakers with 113, while Connecticut won the meet with a score of 163.
Strickland and senior Veronica Salcido provided a one-two finish for the Quakers in the 1,000 meters. The two were well ahead of the pack, but Strickland was the first member of the Red and Blue to reach the finsh line. She won the event with an ECAC qualifying time of 2:55.14, while Salcido clocked out at 2:56.52. They were the only two competitors to break the three-minute mark.
Senior Renee McDougall also reached the ECAC qualifying time. She did so in the 400 meters where she won her heat and finished second overall. Her time of 56.31 was about a half-second behind the winning time.
The Quakers scored in three straight heats in the 500 meters. Senior Paige Madison was the runner-up in the event. She was just a few strides behind the winner from Hampton with an ECAC qualifying time of 1:15.65. In the next heat, freshman Ariana Tabatabaie ended with the fifth-best time in the event at 1:18.49. One heat later, senior Adrianne McCray posted the sixth-place time of 1:18.85.
McDougall, Madison and Strickland were also a part of the ECAC qualifying 4x400-meter relay. The senior trio was joined by freshman Shakele Seaton in a second-place finish. The quartet improved upon their time from a month ago with a finish of 3:49.34. The 4x800-meter relay also scored with a third-place finish of 9:35.52.
Freshman Lydia Ali scored in the 60 meters and 200 meters. The Bryn Mawr, Pa., native finished the 60 meters in sixth place with a time of 7.73 and was fifth in the 200 with a finish of 25.15.
In the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Gabrielle Piper added to Penn's scoring and ECAC qualifiers list when her finish of 8.78 placed her third in her heat and fourth overall.
In the field events, senior Kristen Judge and freshman Annie Holland each finished fourth when they surpassed 1.66 meters (5 feet, 5 1/4 inches).
Brooke Hamscher, Jillian Hart and Davielle Brown all scored in the pole vault. Hamscher was second (3.50 meters/11-05.75 ft.), Hart was fourth (3.35m/10-11.75 ft.) and Brown was sixth (3.20m/10-06 ft.).
Charlotte Pope scored in both the weight throw and the shot put. She was eighth in the weight throw with her best toss measuring 14.84 meters (48-08.25 ft.) and sixth in the shot put at 11.96 meters (39-03 ft.).
Senior Catherine Okoukoni also scored in multiple events. She was third in the long jump at 5.54 meters (18-02.25 ft.) and fourth in the triple jump at 11.67 meters (38-03.50 ft.).
Next week, the Quakers return to the historic Armory for the Great Dane Classic. The Red and Blue placed third at that meet last year. The 2012 edition is set for Friday night.
