Third Varsity Posts Win for No. 9 Lightweights

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. - Following a third-place finish in the Dodge Cup race against No. 2 Yale and No. 7 Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania lightweight rowing team finished Saturday morning on a high note with a four-second victory in the third varsity race.

Second-ranked Yale edged out Columbia in the varsity 8 race for the Dodge Cup. The Bulldogs led wire-to-wire and the Quakers suffered from a slow start that they were not able to recover from. Yale won the Dodge Cup with a time of 5:57.3 - two seconds ahead of the host Lions. Penn finished at 6:12.2.

To finish the day, the Quakers matched up with Yale in the third varsity race. Penn fell behind early, but the posted a come-from-behind victory with a winning time of 6:41.1. Yale finished in 6:45.6.

In the opening race, the freshman pulled away from Columbia and were alongside Yale until the final 400 meters. The last push from the Bulldogs was good enough for the win at 6:15.9, while Penn slid past the finish line at 6:22.7. Columbia was a distant third at 6:32.0.

The second varsity finished third for Penn. Yale won with a time of 6:09.6. Penn stopped the clock at 6:36.9. The Quakers were the runner-up in second freshmen fours race. Columbia (7:27.3) edged out the Quakers (7:29.9).

Next week the Quakers take on Princeton for the rights to the Wood-Hammond Cup. The Tigers will serve as the hosts this year and Georgetown will join the races as a guest on Saturday.
