OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Senior Thomas Brandt has been named one of 30 candidates for the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in men's soccer. Brandt, entering his second season as a captain of the Quakers is one of two Ivy League student-athletes to make the cut from players submitted around the nations.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a senior at his school and possess notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. In a release from the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Committee today, the acronym CLASS is described as meaning "Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School" while focusing on the total student-athlete and encouraging "students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities."
"We are very thrilled for Thomas," head coach Rudy Fuller said. "The recognition is well deserved. He has been the epitome of a student-athlete throughout his time at Penn and is a fantastic example of the type of student-athlete we have within Penn Soccer and the entire Athletic Department."
Fuller went on to praide the qualities Brandt possesses which made him a candidate for the Lowe's Senior ClASS Award.
"Thomas' community work at home and on campus at Penn, his leadership on and off the field for the soccer program and his character are second-to-none," Fuller said. "His athletic accolades and impact on Penn's success over the past three years have been well publicized, but what Thomas does off teh field and in the classroom is just as impressive, if not more so. It has been an honor to have him as a member of this program."
The list of 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season and those 10 student-athletes will be placed on the official ballot to be voted on by media, coaches and fans. The 2011 winner of the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award will be announced during the NCAA Men's College Cup Dec. 9-11 in Hoover, Ala.
The selection as a candidate for the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award continues an impressive stretch for Brandt which has seen the Palmyra, Pa. native earn a spot on the preseason Herman Award Watch List for the nation's best men's soccer player and receive preseason All-America accolades from CollegeSoccerNews.com. A first-team All-Ivy and All-Region player last year and an ECAC All-Star, Brandt was an Academic All-Ivy selection and a Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area choice for his off-field performance.
"The Lowe's Senior CLASS Award committee has done a tremendous job selecting 30 student-athletes who demonstrate what is good about collegiate athletics," Fuller said. "I am proud of Thomas for earning his place among this elite group and representing the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Soccer. Congratulations to the candidates, their coaches and institutions and I look forward to Thomas continuing on in this process during the season."
