EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – A long day of wrestling saw the University of Pennsylvania send two grapplers to the finals at the East Stroudsburg Open, with #4 Lorenzo Thomas claiming the championship at 184 pounds.

Thomas was 5-0 on the day, with three wins coming with bonus points as he picked up a major decision, a technical fall and a fall en route to the title. In the semifinals, he knocked off Penn State’s Matt McCutcheon, 4-2, in his toughest test of the day. The final was all Thomas as he knocked off a second Big Ten opponent, Taylor Jackson of Rutgers, 16-1.

Also in the finals for Penn was sophomore Dan McDevitt at 174 pounds. The performance was a breakout effort from McDevitt as he posted a 5-1 record after winning six matches during the entirety of his rookie campaign. Like Thomas, McDevitt had three bonus-point wins – also with one each of a major, tech fall and fall. Three of his wins were against EIWA opponents – two over Navy and one against Army.

Up a weight for this season at 133 pounds, Caleb Richardson went 5-1 to finish fourth. He wrestled his way to the semifinals thanks to a pair of pins and a major decision to go with a 3-2 win over Bucknell’s Zach Valley in the quarters.

Penn showed plenty of promise at 157 pounds with three wrestlers reaching the quarterfinals. Overall, Penn was 13-6 in that weight class, with Ray Bethea, Charlie Lynch and Brooks Martino all reaching the quarterfinals.

The Quakers hunted bonus points all day long, finishing the tournament with 12 wins by fall, three technical falls and 11 major decisions.

Penn returns to the mat next weekend, hosting the Keystone Classic in The Palestra on Sunday starting at 9 a.m.
