US World University Games Selection Camp Release

PRINCETON – While focusing on “Championships Season” for the Penn heavyweight rowing program, three members of the Red and Blue were called to USRowing camps this summer to compete for spots on Team USA for international competition this summer.

Daren Frankel and Louis Lombardi were invited to the USRowing Under-23 National Team Selection Camp to be held this summer at Brown University. The camp will select the men’s eight and four crews which will compete at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships July 24-28 in Linz, Austria. A full team roster is expected to be announced on July 10. In 2012, the United States won three medals at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships, including gold in the men’s eight and silver in the men’s four with coxswain.

Frankel and Lombardi are two of 20 men selected to the camp – half of which row in the Ivy League. Penn is one of three Ivy schools with multiple rowers invited to the camp, joined by Brown (two) and Princeton (four).

In addition to Frankel and Lombardi’s selection to the U23 camp, Harry Holroyd was also invited to a USRowing camp this summer. Holroyd was one of 23 rowers invited to the World University Games Selection Camp in Boston this summer. Holroyd competed previously for USRowing at the 2011 World Junior Championships where his men’s eight+ boat finished fifth. Holroyd will be unable to accept his invitation to the Selection Camp due to commitments already made to his summer internship program in Washington, D.C.

All three Penn rowers invited to USRowing camps this summer recently posted Penn’s best finish at EARC Sprints since 2007 with a 10th-place row over the weekend in the Varsity Eight. On Friday, they will row against Cornell for the Madeira Cup on the Schuylkill River before heading to Sacramento, Calif. For the IRA Championships Regatta May 31-June 2.
