Three Penn Tennis Players Earn Academic All-Area Honors

PHILADELPHIA – University of Pennsylvania senior Mikhail Bekker has been named the 2006-07 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men’s Tennis Performer of the Year. Bekker, who also earned the honor in 2005-06, is one of six student-athletes selected to the 2006-07 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men’s Tennis Team.

The team is voted by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area. To be eligible, the student-athletes must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

A two-time team captain, Bekker helped lead the Quakers to consecutive Ivy League titles, the program’s first championships in the sport in 36 years. The Moscow, Russia native has a 78-39 overall singles mark, playing mainly the Nos. 2 and 3 spots.

Bekker is joined on the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men’s Tennis Team by teammate Jason Pinsky, a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection in singles. Pinsky went 6-3 in Ivy League matches at No. 1 this spring, and 6-1 in the fall. He was the only player in the Ivy League to earn first-team status at both singles and doubles. This is his first time on the Academic All-Area team.

On the women’s side, junior Julia Koulbitskaya earned her first Academic All-Area honors. She compiled a 20-10 record in singles this year, in the Nos. 3 and 4 spots, including an 8-2 record in Ivy League play. The team captain has been named first-team All-Ivy in singles for the past two years, and this year, helped the Quakers reach a No. 51 national ranking, and go 7-0 in Ivy League play this year, clinching the Ivy League Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
