Three Quakers Through To the Quarterfinals at Cissie Leary

PHILADELPHIA - Three members of the University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team made it through to the quarterfinals on the first day of competition at the Cissie LearyInvitational on Friday.

Penn sophomores Yulia Rivelis and Julia Koulbitskaya and freshman Alexis Plukas each made it through to the round of 16. Rivelis cruised past Arizona's Iza Ferreira, 6-0, 6-1, before defeating Colorado's Lauren Shearer 6-1, 6-2 in the second round. Koulbitskaya likewise had little trouble advancing, beating Cornell's Nisha Suda, 6-3, 6-4, and Princeton's Rankin Williams 6-0, 6-0. Plukas got past Princeton's Laura Trimble, 6-2, 6-0, and Arizona's Kasia Jakowlew, 6-2, 7-5.

Also in singles play, sophomore Michelle Mitchell advanced to the second round by defeating Angela Hendry of Colorado, 6-2, 6-1, and senior Sara Schiffman got by Darcy Robertson of Princeton, 7-5, 6-2. Senior Caroline Stanislawski also made it to the second round by defeating Cleveland State's Abby Showalter, 6-3, 6-0.

In the doubles competition, Rivelis and Koulbitskaya are in to the quarterfinals with 8-4 and 8-5 wins over teams from Princeton and Columbia.

The Invitational continues tomorrow and Sunday at Lott Courts and Levy Tennis Pavillion.
