PHILADELPHIA – Two of Pennsylvania’s premier collegiate wrestling programs are set to do battle inside The Palestra on January 10 as the University of Pennsylvania hosts Lehigh University for a 1 p.m. dual.
These two long-standing rivals will meet for the 56th time in Penn’s first dual meet of the 2015-16 season. The Mountain Hawks are currently ranked No. 10 in the country in the USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll, with a 7-1 record in dual meets.
The highlight bout is likely to come at 184 pounds where a pair of All-Americans will meet. Penn’s Lorenzo Thomas is ranked No. 6 in the country with a 12-2 record. Lehigh’s Nathaniel Brown, a NCAA finalist last year, is ranked No. 4 with a 7-1 record.
Another marquee matchup is likely to come at 133 pounds where Penn’s Caleb Richardson – a two-time NCAA qualifier – will wrestle Lehigh’s No. 17 Mason Beckman. The two met twice last year, both wins for Beckman. The first bout was a 3-2 decision in the dual meet, the second was a 3-1 decision in sudden victory at the NCAA Championships – a tournament which saw Beckman eventually earn All-American honors.
According to this week’s InterMat rankings, a total of 10 Top-20 wrestlers are likely to compete in the Penn-Lehigh dual meet, including Penn's C.J. Cobb who is ranked No. 6 at 149 pounds. Of course, that number is subject to change as both the Quakers and Mountain Hawks are set to compete at the Southern Scuffle at UT-Chattanooga on January 1-2.
