PHILADELPHIA - University of Pennsylvania sprint football sophomore linebacker Tom Console has been named the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) Defensive Player of the Week, announced Tuesday. The award marks Console's first of his career.
Console was superb against Franklin Pierce on the road Saturday afternoon, totaling 6.5 tackles, two interceptions and one fumble recovery in the end zone for a Quaker touchdown. The Malvern, Pa. native successfully collapsed on the ball after an FPU fumbled snap on a punt attempt, giving the Red and Blue a 21-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Both of Console's interceptions came in the second half for Penn, helping to stifle the Raven offense. Console was just one yard away from a momentous 85-yard pick-six before losing the ball just feet before the FPU end zone on his second snag of the day.
The Quakers return to historic Franklin Field on Friday evening, hosting the only other 3-0 team in the CSFL, Navy, at 7 p.m. A win over Navy would vault Penn into sole possession of first place in the league standings.
