Track and Field Rounds Out Successful Running of the 123rd Penn Relays


PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's track and field programs rounded out the 123rd running of the Penn Relays, and thus, the culmination of their home seasons, with several more impressive performances. The Red and Blue competed in 11 events on Saturday, recording nine top-10 finishes. 

For the women, the quartet of Maddie VillalbaMikayla SchneiderElla Wurth and Nia Akins set a new program record in the 4x800m relay with a finishing time of 8:33.39, placing seventh. It marked the sixth school record broken by the Quakers over the relays weekend. Freshman Breanne Bygrave placed seventh in the 100m hurdles after advancing to the finals with a time of 13.80 seconds. On the field, Anna Peyton Malizia cleared 1.70m to place ninth.

For the men, the day got started off with the college section of the javelin, as Tim Schanstra set a new PR with a throw of 62.84m, finishing fourth. The foursome of Colin DalyNick TuckWilliam Daly and Chris Hatler placed eighth in the men's 4xMile Championship of America race with a time of 16:46.10. Following them was Wyatt DavidAyman MayberryKyle Oden and Peter Whiteneck who placed seventh in the men's IC4A 4x100. In the 4x800m Championship of America race, Joe NovakJeff WisemanElias Graca and Clark Mangini rounded out the weekend with a time of 7:25.77, just over a second from the school record. 

The best placement of the day came from rookie Sean Clarke, who matched his personal-best mark of 5.20m in the pole vault to finish as runner-up in the championship section. Both Mike Monroe and Noah Kennedy-White recorded eighth-place showings in the high jump and discus championships respectively, while Sean Ryan finished fourth in the college section of the hammer throw at 59.59m. 

The excitement of the weekend will only continue into next weekend for the Quakers, as Penn is set for the 2017 Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships on May 6-7 at Yale University.
