PHILADELPHIA – With cross country in the books, the 2016-17 track and field season is ready to get underway and the University of Pennsylvania will open their indoor season this Friday at the Lehigh Season Opener set to take place in Bethlehem, Pa.
The meet, hosted by Lehigh University at Rauch Fieldhouse, begins on Friday, Dec. 2. Field events begin at 5:30 p.m. while running events will get underway shortly thereafter at 6:30 p.m. The meet will conclude following the men’s and women’s 4x400 meter relays at 9:20 p.m.
Several local colleges will join Penn in competition, including Alvernia, East Stroudsburg, Eastern, Gwynedd Mercy, Moravian, Muhlenberg, Rowan, Temple and West Chester.
The Red and Blue will look to build upon their successes from the 2015-16 season beginning with Friday’s meet. The Quakers have set or matched the school record for NCAA qualifiers in each of the four years under Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Dolan. In Dolan’s first season at the helm, Penn sent a program-high 11 individuals to outdoor NCAA's, followed by 14 in 2014 and 16 in 2015 and 2016. The Quakers return 11 of those 16 qualifiers for the 2016-17 season.
Following Lehigh’s Season Opener, Penn returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 11 for the New Year Invitational hosted by Princeton University.
