Twelve Penn Athletes Voted to Academic All-Area

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania had 12 men and women earn Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area in their respective sports during the fall season. In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area, student-athletes must be in at least their second year at their present institution and must career a 3.00 GPA for football and a 3.20 GPA for all other sports.

The Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area program is voted upon by the sports information offices from the various NCAA member institutions in the Philadelphia area. In all, 31 schools can nominate and vote as part of the Academic All-Area program. A total of 24 Academic All-Area teams are announced each academic year -- seven in the fall, six in the winter, and 11 in the spring.

Penn’s 2015 fall-sport honorees are as follows…

Football: Justin Watson (Wharton, undeclared) was named the Academic Performer of the Year. He was joined on the team by seven teammates: seniors Ian Dobbins (Wharton, Marketing) Jimmy Gammill (Wharton, Finance), Daniil Lysenko (Wharton, Finance) and Tanner Thexton (Wharton, Statistics), and juniors Nick Demes (Mechanical Engineering & Applied Mechanics), Dan Poulos (Wharton, Finance) and Brian Schoenauer (Wharton, Finance).

Men’s Cross Country: Senior Brendan Smith (Marketing & Operations/Fine Arts) was one of seven men named.

Women’s Cross Country: Junior Ashley Montgomery (Wharton, Management) was one of seven women named.

Women’s Soccer: Senior Caroline Dwyer (Economics) was one of 11 women named.

Field Hockey: Senior Elizabeth Hitti (Mechanical Engineering & Applied Mechanics) was one of 11 women named.
