Two Individuals, One Relay Reach Finals for Women's Track and Field

ECAC Day One Results

BOSTON, Mass. - Two members of the University of Pennsylvania women's indoor track and field team advanced to the finals at theECAC Championships Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Track andAthletic Center as did the 4x800 relay team.Senior Jamie Massarelli, sophomore Leah Brown and the relay teamwill compete Sunday for their respectiveECAC indoor titles.

Championship Sunday kicks off with the pole vault final at 11 a.m., followed by the weight throw and triple jump finals at noon. The distance medley relay will be the first track final to be decided, starting at 1 p.m. Finally, the 4x800 relay final closes out the championships at 3:20 p.m., with the awards ceremony following at 3:40 p.m.

Massarelli was the top finisher in the preliminaries of the500 meters. Her time of 1:13.18 topped a field of 18 entering Sunday's final. That time also moved her into second-place all-time in the Penn record books. It was the fastest 500 meters by a member of the Red and Blue since Jessie Carlin set the record in 2005 (1:11.77).

Brown will compete in Sunday's finals of the 60 meters after she finished 10th in the first round and third in the semifinals. In the fastest heat of the preliminaries, she was fourth with her time of 7.72, but in the semis, she set a new career best. Brown crossed the finish line in 7.63, improving upon her second-place time in the Penn record books.

The 4x800 relay also made it into Sunday. They'll participate in the finals afterfinding their way into ninth-place - the last qualifying spot.Senior Anna Aagenes is the only upperclassmen among the foursome that finished in 9:12.27. Meanwhile, the 4x400 relay team was 10th. The squad missed reaching the finals by a little more than a second, finishing at 3:49.61.

Senior Kathryn Gevitz competed in the long jump and placed 11th. Her final jump was her best, measuring 5.58 meters (18 feet, 3.75 inches).
