Two Members of Gymnastics Team Earn ECAC Honors

Centerville, Mass. - Two members of the University of Pennsylvania gymnastics team earned Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) honors for the week of March 13. Senior Leah Moon was named Gymnast of the Week and freshman Stephanie Ortiz earned Rookie of the Week honors for their performances at the Air Force Academy on March 10 and Denver on March 12.

Ortiz, a Silver Spring, Md. native, finished fifth on the uneven bars at the Air Force Academy with a score of 9.675. She followed that performance with the Quakers highest score on the beam at Denver on March 12. She had a career-high 9.800 in the event, good for fourth place overall. Ortiz is currently ranked 15th in the ECAC on the beam. This was the first ECAC honor of her career.

Moon earned her award after a successful weekend out west. The Bloomfield Hills, Mich. native earned a third-place finish on the vault at Air Force with a score of 9.700. At the meet she also placed fourth on the beam with a 9.625 and fourth in the floor exercise with a 9.650. At Denver, the tri-captain continued her weekend of success against strong competition with a sixth-place finish on the beam with a 9.725. Moon's honor was her first ECAC weekly award. She was named first-team All-ECAC for her performance on the vault in 2004 and second-team on the vault the same season.

Moon is currently ranked second in the ECAC on the beam and she also ranks 16th in the Northeast Region in the same event. The Quakers are currently ranked second as a team in the ECAC and sixth in the Northeast.

The Red and Blue are next in action on March 19, when they host Cornell in Hutchinson Gymnasium at 1 p.m.
