PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore Kevin Unger scored the match-winner at 107:21 to keep the University of Pennsylvania undefeated in Ivy League action with a 1-0 decision over Columbia Saturday night at Rhodes Field. Penn improved to 7-2-1 (3-0-0 Ivy League) while Columbia remained winless in the League (0-2-1) and 5-5-1 overall.
Penn found its footing after halftime, outshootingthe Lions 6-3 in the second half and then 5-0 in the overtime periods. Sophomore Omid Shokoufandeh fired five shots and nearly buried two, but Columbia’s Alex Maffeo provided solid goalkeeping through nearly two overtimes.
Shokoufandeh helped set up the match-winner with the clock winding down in the final overtime. His cross into the box found Ryan Tracy who pitched it to Unger on the wide right. Unger struck the ball, and all of Rhodes Field held its breath to see if he could catch the far corner of the net.He did, andthe crowd erupted in cheers as Penn stormed the field.
For the Quakers, senior captain Daniel Cepero gathered four saves in his school-record 20th career shutout and fifth of the season.
The Quakers close out their three-match homestand with a non-league meeting with Rutgers Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
