PHILADELPHIA--Former Penn men's soccer players Danny Cepero and Alex Grendi both made appearances in the 2009 openers for their respective MLS teams.
Thursday, goalkeeper Danny Cepero resumed his starting role in the net for the New York Red Bulls and made three saves in a 3-0 loss to Seattle Sounders FC. It was the Sounders inaugural match.
In his rookie year of the MLS, Grendi came off the bench for the reigning MLS Cup champion, Columbus Crew. He logged 44 minutes in a 1-1 draw with the Saturday match against the Houston Dynamo. More importantly, his playmaking skills immediately translated to the professional level as he assisted on the Crew's game-tying goal in the 82nd minute. Grendi's cross was redirected by the head of Jason Garey to the feet of 2008 MLS MVP Guillermo Barros Schelotto for the score.
Both teams will play next on Saturday, March 28. Cepero and the Red Bulls will host the New England Revolution at 7:30 p.m. while Grendi and the Crew will take on Toronto FC in Columbus at 4 p.m.
