Valenti Finishes Second: Quakers Place 10th Overall

Las Vegas, Nev. - Junior captain Matt Valenti took second at the 2005 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday evening at the Cashman Center. The Quakers finished 10th as a team, its highest finish in two appearances at the tournament.

Valenti faced off with the top seed in the tournament and the nation in Shawn Bunch of Edinboro. Bunch scored first with a takedown, but Valenti escaped before Bunch could secure riding time. With the score 2-1, Valenti chose to start down in the second period and quickly tied the score with an escape. Bunch scored a takedown midway through the third period to make the score, 4-2. Valenti had several shots late in the period, but Bunch held his ground to win the title.

The loss was the first of the season for Valenti who is 12-1 on the season.

Penn had three other wrestlers place at the tournament. Senior captain Dustin Wiles finished fifth at 184 pounds, while junior Gene Zannetti took sixth at 157 lbs. and sophomore Lior Zamir was seventh at 174 lbs.

Michigan won the meet with 145 points, while Ivy League foe Cornell finished second with 116 points. Missouri was third with 102.5 points, while Edinboro was fourth with 101 and Arizona State rounded out the top-five with 92 points. The Quakers had 69 points.

The Red and Blue open their dual meet portion of the season on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 6:30 p.m. with No. 10 Penn State followed by Drexel at 8 p.m. The University of Pennsylvania will honor Roger Reina, the winningest coach in program history, who retired in July.
