Valenti Wins, Herrington Falls at NWCA All-Star Classic

DALLAS, Texas - Senior Matt Valenti scored a 6-5 win over No. 5 Coleman Scott of Oklahoma State, while classmate Matt Herrington fell to No. 3 James Yonushonis of Penn State, 5-4, Monday night at the NWCA All-Star Classic at the Dallas Convention Center.

The annual event showcases the nation's elite collegiate wrestlers, pitting the top-rankedgrapplers against each other at each weight class in a dual-format event.

Valenti was meeting Scott for the first time; Herrington last faced Yonushonis in the consolation quarterfinalsat the NCAA Championships last year, where he won by pinfall in just 49 seconds.

Valenti, the nation's No. 1 seed at 133 lbs,took a 2-0 lead with a first-period takedown off a lift, but Scott escaped seconds laterto make it 2-1. The defending national champion scored another takedown, but Scott escaped again. TheOklahoma State All-American tried a hip toss and the two hit the mat hard, forcing Valenti to take an injury timeout with the score at 4-2.

In the second period, Valenti rode out Coleman to virtually secure the riding time advantage despite being down for thefinal period. Valenti escaped midway through the third to take a 5-2 advantage, butScott scored a late three-point takedown totie it at 5-5. The points came too late for Scott, as the buzzer rang before he could turn Valenti, whoearned a 6-5 decision with riding time.

Herrington, ranked second in the country at 174 lbs.,scored a takedown with a minute gone in the first period to take a 2-0 lead, riding Yonushonis for the remainder of the period. Yonushonis deferred and Herrington chosedown for the second period, escapedand increased the lead to three. Yonushonis responded late in the period with a two-point takedown to cut the lead to 3-2.

Herrington started on top for the third period and Yonushonis escaped to tie the bout at 3-3, then scored a takedown on a double-leg to take a 5-3 lead with a minute to go, and Herrington's riding time point wasn't enough as he lost a 5-4 decision.

The Quakers return to team action this Saturday when they travel to the Northeast Duals in Albany, N.Y. No. 14Penn will face off against No. 1 Minnesota, No. 12 Central Michigan, Bloomsburg and Binghamton.
