PHILADELPHIA, Pa. The University of Pennsylvania volleyball coach Kerry Carr has announced her early decision acceptances for the Class of 2010. Next year’s incoming freshman class will include seven student-athletes: Betsy Conway (Seymour/Seymour, Ind.), Natalie Drucker (Pinecrest School/Hollywood, Calif.), Anne Magnuson (New Trier/Wilmette, Ill.) Shannon Moody (Rim of the World/Cedar Glen, Calif.), Mary Russell (Woodward Academy/Atlanta, Ga.), Elizabeth Semmens (Poly Prep Country Day School/Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Jesse Yeager (Oak Park/Oak Park, Calif.)
“I am really excited about this 2006 recruiting class. As we are graduating our starting middle and outside hitters, I believe that these young ladies have the ability to come in and contend for these positions immediately,” said coach Carr. “Their athleticism will help challenge our returning cast of players by pushing them to improve to the next level of play. These girls have terrific winning attitudes, and I have enjoyed watching their teams compete and win championships. I look forward to bringing that winning spirit to the 2006 Penn Volleyball team.”
Conway, a middle blocker, plays for the Team Indiana Volleyball Club and was a member of the 2005 USA Volleyball Junior Olympics Team that placed third. The Seymour, Ind., native was an all-county and all-conference selection as a junior and senior.
Also adding depth at middle blocker will be Drucker, who played on the Florida 3A State Championship team at Pinecrest in 2005 and 2003. Following her senior season, she was named first-team all-county by the Sun Sentinel and the Miami Herald. Drucker is a member of the Boomers Volleyball Club.
Magnuson, a four-year member of the Sky High Volleyball Club, is also a middle blocker. She earned all-state honors from the Chicago Tribune in 2005 as well as MVP honors from the Pioneer Press. In 2004, she played on the USA Volleyball Junior Olympics Team that placed third.
Carr will welcome Moody at the outside hitter position in the fall. She was a first-team All-CIF selection and San Bernando Sun first-team all-county honoree in 2005. In 2004, her high school team won the Division III AA California State Championship and were runners-up last year. Moody plays for the Vintage Volleyball Club.
Coming to Penn from Atlanta, Ga., is Russell, a 2005 Prepvolleyball.com All-America selection. The setter/defensive specialist earned first-team all-state and all-region honors last fall. Russell is member of the A5 Volleyball Club and was named first-team by the Atlanta Journal Constitution following her senior year.
Semmens, an outside hitter, played in the 2003 USA Junior Olympics. She has been a member of the New York City Juniors Volleyball Club for four years. The Brooklyn native was a two-time Poly Prep Athlete of the Year. As a freshman, Poly Prep placed first at the 2003 New York State Championships.
Rounding out the Class of 2010 is Yeager, the 6-2 middle blocker/outside hitter will provide height to the front line. She was named CIF-SS first-team all-state her senior year, Ventura County Star volleyball player of the year and athlete of the year and Daily News all-area team MVP and a Los Angeles Times top performer. Yeager plays for Gene’s Team Volleyball Club and was a member of the USA Volleyball Junior Olympics Team that placed fifth in 2004 and 2005.
