Volleyball Goes 1-1 in First Day of Penn Sheraton Invitational

PHILADELPHIA-- The Penn women's volleyball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Penn Sheraton Invitational, defeating Canisius 3-1 Friday afternoon but falling to Pepperdine 3-0 Friday night.

The Quakers (2-6) downedCanisius(5-7) 3-1 behind games of30-24, 26-30, 30-22, and 30-15. Senior Cara Thomason led the way with 14 kills and 17 digs, while senior Michelle Kauffman added 12 kills. Sophomore Linda Zhang put up 44 assists, while the Quakers combined for 12 aces overall. Mary Boller led the Golden Griffins with 10 kills, while Jess Stackhouse had 18 digs.

In the nightcap of the Invitational first day, Pepperdine ran past Penn 3-0 despite some outstanding play from Penn in the second game.The Waves limited Penn to 29 kills and 48 digs, and no Quakers got into double figures in either category. Julia Rubenstein led all players with 17 kills for Pepperdine, while Kekai Crabbe had 20 digs and Melissa Mehlhorn added 18 digs and 34 assists.

The Quakers are back in action Saturday when they meet St. Francis (N.Y.) at 12:30 p.m. and Towson at 5:30 p.m.at The Palestra.
