PHILADELPHIA The University of Pennsylvania volleyball team opens its home schedule this weekend by hosting the Sheraton Invitational. The Quakers will host four other teams in a 10-match tournament starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 23. There will be five matches played both Friday and Saturday.
The Red and Blue will welcome Canisius, Pepperdine, St. Francis (N.Y.) and Towson. Each team will play four matches over the two-day event. Highlighting the tournament are the Pepperdine Waves who have received votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) top 25 poll. The Waves have a 3-1 record against ranked opponents this year.
“We will be extremely challenged by the talent level of some of the teams in this tournament,” said Penn coach Kerry Carr, “if we can get better in each match, then it is a win for our program this weekend’s tournament should be a turning point for the team.”
The Quakers will look forward to a final tune-up this weekend before Ivy League play starts. Carr added, “of course every match is designed to prepare us for a tough Ivy League season coming up next week.”
There will be admission for the tournament ($1 students/$5 adults), and all proceeds will go toward the American Red Cross for their Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
“The team really wanted to find a way to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina,” said Carr. “We dedicated this weekend to that effort and got everyone in the athletics department to contribute their time and effort to selling the donation’ tickets before the weekend and during the matches. We hope to raise more than $1,000 to send to the Red Cross.”
Tickets will be on sale across campus during the week. Anyone who purchases a ticket in advance will receive a 2005 Penn volleyball schedule magnet.
