PHILADELPHIA - Penn (4-5) welcomes Villanova to The Palestra tonight for match four of their six-match homestand. The Quakers are riding a four-match winning streak that started Sept. 16 with a 3-0 win over Lipscomb and continued over the weekend as the Red and Blue went 3-0 in the Sheraton-Penn Invitational.
Villanova (6-9, 1-1 BIG EAST) split its opening weekend of BIG EAST matches sweeping DePaul Saturday before losing to Notre Dame, 3-1, Sunday. The loss to the Fighting Irish snapped a five-match winning streak. Wildcat senior Jenna Link was named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll. She opened the third game of Nova’s match versus DePaul with 19 straight serves breaking the NCAA record of 18 set last season.
Freshman Elizabeth Semmens was named Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Week for her efforts over the weekend. Semmens registered 24 kills in two matches. Against Fairliegh Dickinson she had 14 kills and hit .333.
Laura Black (MVP), Anna Shlimak and Semmens were named to the Sheraton-Penn Invitational all-tournament team. Black led Penn in kills (39) and hitting percentage (.333). Shlimak tallied 34 kills and 34 digs.
In their meeting last season, Villanova beat the Quakers 31-29, 30-25 and 30-24 at Nevin Gymnasium. Kathryn Turner led Penn with nine kills. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 21-14.
Saturday, Penn continues its homestand by opening its Ivy League slate. The Quakers welcome rival Princeton to The Palestra for a 7 p.m. start.
Penn is currently eighth in the country averaging 19.52 digs per game. Last season the Quakers finished 17th in the nation (18.56).
