PHILADELPHIA - Penn was overpowered by the Yale Bulldogs in three sets on Saturday evening inside The Palestra, 21-25, 17-25, 19-25. Emma White led the team with 12 kills while Amanda Pacheco added 10 with a team-best hitting percentage of .304 in the match.
Facing one of the quickest offenses they've had to face this season, Penn was able to hang with the Bulldogs for much of the first set before Yale reeled off four points in a row to take a 16-13 lead. White was extremely active in the early-going, notching three straightkills for the Quakersin the middle of the setoff Yale digs that sailed over the net and were quickly slammed down. The Red and Blue stayed within striking distance almost the whole way, closing to within a point on two occasions before two late attack errors did them in.
Yale began to assert itself immediately in the second set. An attack error by the Bulldogs evened the set at 2-2 but that was as close as Penn would get the rest of the way. Two kills from Mollie Rogers and a Penn attack error staked Yale to a 5-2 lead before a four-point swing later in the set put the Bulldogs ahead 15-7. The Quakers pulled within six late in the set but another kill from Rogers gave Yale the 2-0 lead.
Hopes of a Penn comeback were erased quickly in the third set. Yale scored five of the first six points to give itself a comfortable working margin and the lead ballooned to as much as 20-9 before the Quakers began to make a charge. Two consecutive Yale errors set the stage for an ace from Meghan Connolly as the Red and Blue began to close the gap late. The defensive front line then began to shut down some of the openings that the Bulldogs had exploited early on, as three blocks from Penn brought them to within six at 24-18. Yale used a timeout to gather itself but Pacheco had one kill left in the tank as the Quakers found themselves within five. Unfortunately, Yale was able to close out the match after a long rally on the fourth match point, taking the set at 25-19.
Penn (6-11, 2-5 Ivy) will have only one match next weekend, taking on rival Princeton at 7 p.m. on Friday night at The Palestra.
