Volleyball Makes Cornell See Red

Penn-Cornell Box Score (pdf)

Without the services of kills leader Lauren Martin and down a set, the Penn volleyball team rallied behind the strong performances of Amanda Pacheco and Susan Stuecheli to escape with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-17)win over a game Cornell squad and earn its firstwin away from The Palestrathis season.

Multiple runs from Cornell staked the Big Red to a 1-0 advantage after the first set. Trailing 6-3, they reeled off five straight points to take the lead and then duplicated it after falling behind 13-11. A service error broke the streak for the Quakers, but 16-14 was the closest the Red and Bluewould get for the remainder of the set. Down 24-19, Penn fended off three straight set points and forced Cornell to use a timeout before a kill from Meagan Tatum gave the set to the Big Red.

Penn was able to reverse its fortunes in the second, turning a 2-1 Cornell lead around off the serve of Dani Shepherd. Kristen Etterbeek produced two kills and Pacheco added another in the stretch, which was topped off by a Cornell attack error to give the Quakers a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Ahead by a count of 9-7, the Red and Blue really took control in the middle of the set with a five-point surge that doubled up the hosts at 14-7. Emma White started and ended the rally with kills that sandwiched a kill and solo block from Stuecheli and a Pacheco ace. Cornell would subsequently fall behind by double digits and then rally to within six at 23-17 before White and Stuecheli ended the threat with consecutive kills.

Undeterred, Cornell's lead in the third set would reach four points at 14-10 before Penn fought back. An attack error gave the Quakers an opening and White, Pacheco and Etterbeek strung together three straight kills to bring the set square at 14-14. Ahead 22-21, Stuecheli cashed in two points, one courtesy of Hilary Ash and the other from Meghan Connolly, to give Penn a set point. Cornell erased one with a kill from Kelly Marble but her next attack landed out and Penn went to the fourth set up 2-1.

In the last set, Cornell simply gave the Quakers too much help. The Big Red combined nine attack errors with three errors on serve and Penn added three aces from White and Shepherd into the mix to score the decisive blow in the match.

Amanda Pacheco ended the match with a game-high 13 kills. Fellow middle blocker Susan Stuecheli added 11 while Emma White notched 12 from her outside attacking position. Kristen Etterbeek tied a game high with 24 digs, the first time this season that Dani Shepherd hasn't at least tied for the team high in digs. Shepherd, fourth nationally in that category coming into the match, did add 20 to her season total.

Penn improves to 6-8 (2-2 Ivy) with the victory and will look for its first weekend sweep of the season tomorrow when they travel to face Columbia. The match will start at 5 p.m. from Levien Gym and live stats will be available here.
