PHILADELPHIA The University of Pennsylvania volleyball team put a halt to its two-match skid by closing out its non-league play with a 3-0 victory over La Salle. Penn simply outmatched the Explorers, winning 30-25, 30-20 and 30-16. The Quakers hit an astounding .347, while stifling the La Salle attack game holding the Explorers (7-15)to a .008 hitting percentage.
Penn (5-7) trailed by four midway through Game 1, but took the lead at 22-21 and never relinquished it. In the set, the Quakers connected on 14 of 30 kills, led by Anna Shlimak and Natalie Drucker who had three apiece.
The Red and Blue never trailed in Game 2 and were only tied three times early on. Penn led by as much as 13, andhad four services aces from four different players in the game.
Penn trailed early in Game 3, but when the Quakerstook a 6-5 lead they never looked back. Freshman Ashley Hawkins recorded her first collegiate kill in the game.
Shlimak led the Quakers with 10 kills. Linda Zhang and Kira Campbell combined for 34 of Penn’s 38 assists.
The Red and Blue hit the road this weekend for their first Ivy League road trip. Penn plays at Harvard Friday at 7 p.m., thenmeets DartmouthSaturday at 4 p.m.
