FULLERTON, Calif. -After a rough start to the season, the University of Pennsylvania volleyball picked up its first win of the season, sweeping Lipscomb 3-0 in the Holiday Inn Buena Park Fullerton Classic. Penn (1-5) defeated the Lady Bison 30-18, 30-27 and 30-23.
Penn dominated the Lady Bison (3-10) in Game 1, getting out to an 8-0 lead and never looking back. Laura Black and Natalie Drucker each had four kills.
"Our defense was definitely the key to this match," said head coach Kerry Carr. "They played superb and came up with some big blocks."
Game2 was the only setin whichLipscomb posed a threat. Once again, the Quakers built a comfortable lead, this time 5-0. Midway through the stanza the Lady Bison went on a three-point run and took a brief lead at 18-16. Penn then regained the lead, 20-19, and after a Lipscomb kill to tie the score the Quakers reeled off the next four points to take pull ahead for good. Black and Anna Shlimak each had three kills in the set.
Once again, the Red and Blue played steady defense. Shlimak (14), Meredith Damore (16) and Elizabeth Hurst (14) all reached double digits in digs. Penn totaled 14 team blocks. Freshman Natalie Drucker registered three block solos and six block assists.
Next weekend, Penn hosts the Sheraton-Penn Invitational. On Saturday, the Quakershost Binghamton at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday the Quakers host Quinnipiac at 12:30 p.m. and Fairleigh Dickinson at 5:30 p.m.
