Volleyball Sweeps Temple in Big 5 Tournament Opener

PHILADELPHIA - In the first match of the season, Penn volleyball topped Temple, 3-0, by scores of 25-20, 25-20, and 25-21. Senior Julia Swanson hit .355 with 13 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Lauren Martin added 11 kills, while Amanda Pacheco had eight and a .375 percent, as Penn out-hit the Owls .246-.190. Leading the defense, senior Madison Wojciechowski had 17 digs, while senior Megan Tryon had 38 assists.

In the first set, the squads traded points back-and-forth until the board read 21-20. From there Swanson took over, pounding three kills in the Quakers' 4-0 run that put it in the books.

Set two again showed to be an even matchup. With the score tied 13-13, Penn ran away to a 17-13 advantage and never let up, as the Red and Blue made it 24-18 before getting the final point.

The Quakers' momentum continued in the third, as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Martin's tenth kill of thematchgave them their largest advantage of the set, 21-11. Penn kept its lead, despite a late spurt by the Owls to bring them within three at match point.

Big 5 Tournament action continues tomorrow at the Palestra, first with Temple taking on La Salle at 10 a.m. followed by Villanova and Temple at 1:30 p.m. The Quakers hit the court in the afternoon, with their first match versus La Salle at 4 p.m. and cap off the tourny against Villanova at 7 p.m.
