PHILADELPHIA - The Quakers' first match on the west coast proved to be tough, as the Red and Blue lost to Cal State Fullerton in straight sets on Friday, 25-17, 25-13, 25-11.
Penn got down early but made a comeback in the first set to get within five at 14-9. Six straight made it 20-9. A 5-1 Quaker run brought the Red and Blue back within seven before ultimately falling 25-17.
The Titans flexed their muscle in the second set, scoring eight of the set's first nine points. Penn got as close as five at 16-11, before a 9-2 run ended it 25-13. In the final set the Quakers were unable to get anything going and dropped it 25-11.
Senior Madison Wojciechowski had 15 of team's 42 digs, while senior Megan Tryon added 15 assists and six digs. Offensively, freshman Kristen Etterbeek and senior Julia Swanson both had six kills. Etterbeek also added six digs in the loss.
Penn returns to action tonight at 8 p.m. pacific for a bout with No. 13 UCLA. Live stats can be found here.
