Volleyball's Caldwell Named Rookie of the Week

Ivy League Release

For the third time in the first four weeks of the season, Penn volleyball has again had a freshman honored by the Ivy League. After two awards for Ronnie Bither to begin the season, Alex Caldwell has gotten in on the act this week, claiming her first Ivy League Rookie of the Week.

No one else in the Penn line-up is quite as versatile as Caldwell has proven herself to be in the last couple of weeks. Beginning with a match against Radford in the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Penn Invitational, Caldwell put together a stretch of three triple-doubles in four matches. That included this past week when she tied for a team-high with 15 kills against Delaware while hitting .324, combined with 25 assists and 16 digs.

On Saturday, she kept up her hot streak when the Quakers hosted Princeton. The San Jose, Calif. native once again played a critical role for Penn, slamming 10 kills while collecting 16 assists and 12 digs. Playing a more limited role on Sunday, she still managed 21 assists to go along with six kills and three digs. She was also a part of nine blocks in the three matches.

Caldwell and Co. return to the court this weekend for a pair of road matches. Penn travels to play Dartmouth on Friday night at 7 p.m. before concluding the weekend at Harvard, beginning at 5 p.m.
