Voves Named Ivy League Rookie of the Week

PHILADELPHIA - After picking up both of Penn's victories against Lehigh and Rider this weekend, Mikenzie Voves has been selected as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week. Voves pitched in three games this past weekend, combining for a total of 14.1 innings over the two-day span.

Against Lehigh, Voves received the start in game one and was looking to end Lehigh's eight-game winning streak against Penn. The freshman did not disappoint as she pitched a gem, going the distance and allowing just two runs. Over the seven inning span, Voves scattered four hits, while also striking out two batters en route to her fourth victory of the season.

On Saturday against Rider, Voves pitched three innings in the second game after throwing 4.1 innings and striking out six in the first game. Coming on in relief in the second game, Voves was dominant as she did not allow a runner to reach base against her. She came on with nobody out and a runner on first and in the fifth inning. She got the first batter she faced to ground into a double play and got out of the inning with a ground ball right back at her. In the sixth and seventh innings, Rider did not get a ball out of the infield against her as Voves picked up her fifth victory of the year.

Voves is currently 5-3 on the season with two complete games to her credit. She has allowed just 45 hits through 44.1 innings so far this season. Voves is the second Penn player to receive Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors as Kayla Dahlerbruch was named as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week back in week one.

In addition to Voves, Elysse Gorney was also listed on the weekly honor roll. Gorney led the team in batting with an average of .455 over the four games. She also scored three runs, while walking three times and recorded an on base percentage of .571.

Penn will travel to La Salle on Wednesday for a mid-week contest beginning at 4 p.m. After that, Ivy League play opens up for the Quakers as Harvard and Dartmouth come to Warren Field this Friday and Saturday.
