PHILADELPHIA - Rising senior Matt Weaver was officially named team captain of the 2015-16 University of Pennsylvania lightweights on Tuesday as announced by head coach Colin Farrell. Weaver was selected by his teammates to take over the captaincy.
"This is something I have wanted to do since freshman year," Weaver said of the captaincy. "We have everything we need. We have the coaches, the guys and the facilities. When I was a freshman, the captain was Mark Gannon and he really made an impact on me, and I don't think I'd be in this spot right now if it weren't for Parker and Adam (previous captains). I really want to follow in their footsteps and make the team the best it can be."
"One of the words that we use a lot is 'grind'. Being a part of the grind and the day-to-day work ethic is a big part of what we do," Farrell said. "And I think Matt embodies all of that. I'm really excited to see him as a leader of this team."
Weaver earned a bronze medal as a member of the freshman boat at the 2013 EARC Sprints. It was Penn's first freshman medal in 23 years. As a sophomore, Weaver missed a large part of the season due to injury, but upon his return last year, he spent the majority of the season with the junior varsity.
Matt's brother, Ben, will join the Quakers in the Fall. The Weavers and the rest of the lightweights will be back at the boathouse for practice in late August.
