DES MOINES, Iowa - Penn junior Max Westman finished 21st in the decathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The final five events took place Thursday afternoon at Drake University.

A total of 26 competitors began the event, which started with five events Wednesday.

Westman's score was 6,115. Oregon's Ashton Eaton won the competition, scoring 8,055 points to finish ahead of Tennessee's Jangy Addy (7,916) and Florida State's Gonzalo Barriolhet (7,907). That trio finished well ahead of the rest of the field.

Westman's best finish Thursday came in the discus throw, where his top distance was 41.98 meters (137 feet, 9 inches) allowing him to place sixth among the competitors. He was in the middle of the pack in three other events, placing 15th in the javelin throw (49.93 meters, or 163 feet 10 inches), 16th in the 1,500 (5:04.18), and 17th in the 110-meter hurdles (15.25 seconds). However, Westman was set back significantly in the pole vault, where he failed to clear a height and scored no points.
