DES MOINES, Iowa - Junior Max Westman, the lone representative for the Penn men's track & field team at the NCAA Championships this weekend, sits in 22nd place in the decathlon entering Thursday's final day of competition. Westman scored 3,466 in the first five portions of the event. A total of 26 men entered the decathlon.
Westman got off to a good start in the competition, finishing eighth overall in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.21 seconds. He followed that up with a 17th-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 6.54 meters. In the shot put, Westman placed 25th overall with a top distance of 11.81 meters, and then he cleared 1.78 meters to tie for 22nd in the high jump. In the final event of the day, the 400, Westman clocked 51.65 seconds and was 17th overall.
Oregon's Ashton Eaton lead the decathlon with 4,289 points, just ahead of second-place Jangy Addy of Tennessee (4,238. Rickey Moody of Washington State (4,048) is the only other athlete with more than 4,000 points.
Westman is one of just two Ivy Leaguers competing in the decathlon at NCAAs; the other, Dartmouth's Tyler Koskenoja, is 14th (3,696 points) heading into the final day.
