Whit Shaw Named CSFL Special Teams Player of the Week

CSFL Weekly Release

PHILADELPHIA - After returning three kickoffs for 138 yards and a touchdown against Cornell, Whit Shaw has been CSFL Special Teams Player of the Week. Shaw's efforts helped lift the Quakers to a 35-28 win against their Ivy League rivals from Cornell. In addition to his kickoff returns, Shaw also had the chance at two punt returns, netting a combined 14 yards between the two returns.

Shaw's biggest returns last Friday night always seemed to come at critical moments. With his team leading just 7-0, Shaw took his second punt return of the evening at the Penn 37 and returned it into Cornell territory at the 47 yard line. His punt return would also have 15 yards tacked onto the end for a facemask, setting up the Quakers' second touchdown of the evening and helped give Penn a 17-7 lead heading into halftime.

Not wanting to give the Big Red any momentum coming out of the locker room in the second half, Shaw took the second half kickoff 85 yards for his first kickoff return touchdown this season. That made the score 24-7 just seconds into the final 30 minutes of play.

Cornell would cut the lead to 24-21 midway through the third quarter and again Shaw would give the Quakers momentum as he returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards, down to the Cornell 40 and give Penn another scoring opportunity. In addition to his yardage on special teams, Shaw caught six passes for 101 yards and finished the night with 253 all-purpose yards.

For the season, Shaw has returned 10 kickoffs, averaging 29.5 yards per return. He has also returned six punts and is averaging 9.7 yards per punt return. Shaw also owns the team-high in all-purpose yards with 645, an average of 129 yards per game.

Shaw and the rest of the Quakers will be back in action this Friday for their first road game of the 2011 campaign. This Friday the team will make the trip up to West Point for the annual game with Army. Kickoff for the game is slated for 7 p.m.
