Wieder to Represent USA in World Under-20 Fencing Championships

PHILADELPHIA – The United State Fencing Association announced their 2007 Junior & Cadet World Championship Teams, who will compete in the World Under-20 Fencing Championships in Belek, Turkey, April 10-18.

Penn sophomore Ben Wieder was among those selected. He will fence as a member of the men’s epee team. Selection is based on USA fencing point standings. Along with Wieder, three other fencers will compete on the epee squad: Columbia sophomore Dwight Smith, St. John’s sophomore Stanley Vaksman, and Shipley High School senior Graham Wicas. The team will be coached by Boris Vaksman.

Wieder also qualified to compete in the NCAA Championships, which are being held at Drew University this weekend. He went 31-10 overall this season, and 10-5 in his Ivy League bouts, good for a second-team All-Ivy selection.
