PHILADELPHIA - The Ivy League has announced its weekly awards for men’s lacrosse, and Penn freshman attack Corey Winkoff has been named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week.
This is the second time Winkoff has earned the honor this season, and makes it four times in four weeks that a Quaker has received the Ivy’s weekly rookie award.
Winkoff received the conference honor after dishing out six assists in the Quaker's 12-10 Ivy League win over Harvard, including three in the critical third quarter when Penn broke open a tight game. He assisted consecutive goals in the opening half, which allowed the Quakers to break a 2-2 tie. The game was tied at the half, and still 8-6 in the third quarter, when he fed three-straight goals in a 2:33 span that broke the game open at 11-6. Penn never looked back in gaining the victory.
For the season, Winkoff has a team-high 13 assists and is second on the team with 20 points.
Junior attack Alex Weber earned a spot on the Ivy League’s weekly honor roll, as he scored four goals in the Quakers’ win.
Penn (4-2, 2-0 Ivy) -- ranked 19th in this week's USILA national coaches' poll -- is back in action this weekend at Franklin Field, hosting No. 6 Cornell in another big Ivy League contest. Faceoff is scheduled for noon.
