PHILADELPHIA – After a weekend off from racing, the University of Pennsylvania women’s rowing team gets back to action this weekend at the Clemson Invitational.
It will be a busy weekend of racing for the Quakers, who will race on Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, and then again on Sunday morning. Penn will row in four division: the Varsity 8, the Second Varsity 8, the Varsity 4, and the Second Varsity 4.
As has happened the last few years, the Class of ‘89 will be contested between Penn and Cornell during these races. The Quakers and Big Red are placed in the same four races on Saturday morning, when the Cup will be decided by a points system.
The rest of the field is strong, with 21 boats in the Varsity 8 division including eight ranked boats and three others receiving votes in the latest CRCA poll (including Penn). In addition to Cornell, Penn’s Varsity 8 will compete Saturday morning against No. 4 Ohio State, No. 14 Washington State, and No. 19 Duke. That afternoon, the Quakers will again face off with the fourth-ranked Buckeyes as well as No. 15 Syracuse.
“This regatta is a key cross-regional ranking regatta for all of the major conferences in NCAA Division I rowing,” said Penn’s second-year head coach, Wesley Ng. “We’ll see overlap with the PAC 12, Big 12, Big 10, and ACC, and will represent the Ivy League to the best of our preparation and ability. This is one of the premier spring racing events that attracts incredible competition, so we are going in with our eyes wide open and focused on the task at hand. We will use this experience to test ourselves for our final regular-season race with Princeton, Syracuse, and Iowa before the Ivy League Championships.”
