PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women’s rowing team is ready to open the 2017 spring season this Saturday, racing against Saint Joseph’s and Delaware on the Schuylkill River.
Races are slated to start at approximately 10 a.m. with the Varsity 8, and overall five races will be contested: Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8 (10:20), Varsity 4 (10:40), Third Varsity 8 (11:00), and Second Varsity 4 (11:20).
Penn and Saint Joseph’s contested each other last year along with Boston College; the Quakers won all of the NCAA boats (1V8, 2V8, V4A) on the day.
“Racing this early in the season is a rare treat, and being able to do it in Philly is even better,” said Penn’s second-year head coach, Wesley Ng. “I know that the Philadelphia-area universities are all pushing to improve our rowing speed, so this is an excellent first test. That said, it’s still March 18 and we have lots of room for improvement with regard to fitness, technique, efficiency, and chemistry. What we want to focus upon are the fundamentals.”
