Women's Rowing Sweeps NCAA Boats vs. Saint Joseph's, Delaware

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's rowing team opened the spring portion of its 2016-17 schedule by taking first place in four of five races on the Schuylkill River Saturday morning. The Quakers swept city rival Saint Joseph's and Delaware in the NCAA boats (Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, Varsity 4) and also defeated the Blue Hens in the Varsity 4 B race.

In Saturday's first race, the Varsity 8, Penn clocked 6:38.3 over the 2,000-meter course and easily defeated second-place Delaware (6:48.4) and Saint Joseph's (6:57.4).

In the Second Varsity 8 race, Penn's time of 6:47.6 was well ahead of SJU (7:12.4) and Delaware (7:17.2). The Varsity 4 race also went to Penn, the Quakers timed in 7:30.5 while SJU was second (7:56.7) and Delaware was third (8:02.0). In the Varsity 4 B race, Penn's again was an easy victor, clocking 7:33.9 and finishing nearly 22 seconds ahead of Delaware.

Penn's only loss on the day came in the Third Varsity 8, where Saint Joseph's (7:14.1) beat the Quakers (7:29.6) and the Blue Hens (7:34.2).

Penn is back racing on the Schuylkill again next Saturday, competing in the Murphy Cup.
