PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania’s Director of Squash and Head Women’s Coach, Jack Wyant, has announced Grace Van Arkel and Melissa Alves as captains for the 2016-17 season. The senior/junior duo will lead a squad that finished second in the country last season at the College Squash Association (CSA) Howe Cup.
“I am extremely pleased to have the opportunity to share leadership this season with Grace and Melissa,” said Wyant. “Both are team-oriented and passionate about keeping the Penn program among the nation’s elite.”
Van Arkel returns for her final season in the Red and Blue, looking to build upon an outstanding junior year. The Haverford, Pa. native tallied a regular-season record of 14-2 last year, which included a 6-1 clip in the Ivy League. Competing mostly in the 7-9 positions, Van Arkel’s Ivy triumphs came against Dartmouth, Princeton, Brown, Yale, Columbia and Cornell. In addition, she tallied a 2-1 record at the Howe Cup—defeating Columbia in the First Round and Harvard in the Final.
Alves, who competed in only four matches (4-0) last season due to injury, will look to regain her outstanding form from two years ago. The French Ghanaian went 15-2 as a freshman, including a perfect 7-0 in the Ivy League. Alves finished the season ranked No. 22 in the CSA individual rankings, and helped lead the Quakers to their third Ivy League Championship.
Van Arkel, Alves and the rest of the Quakers will begin their new season on Nov. 12-13 at the Ivy Scrimmages.
