Women's Basketball Begins Big 5 With Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA--The Penn women's basketball game will look for its first win over the Hawks since the 2004-05 season. The Quakers (1-2) will host the first game of a men's-women's double-header at The Palestra. The women's tip with SJU (2-1) will be at 5:30 p.m. with the men vs. Citadel at 8 p.m.

Both teams are coming off losses over the weekend with Penn falling to Manhattan, 66-44 and the Hawks slipping in a 54-47 game vs. VCU.

In the last outing, Carrie Biemer and Kimberly Franklin led the team's scoring with 11 points each. Biemer has led the team in all three games this season, setting her career-high (28 points) in the season opener.

For Saint Joseph's, senior Timisha Gomez is averaging 12 points per game.Newcomer Sarah Acker is averaging a double-double with10.7 ppg and 10.3 rpg. Junior Mary Kate McDade has dished 13 assists this season, but has also committed 13 turnovers and scored just eight points.

Historically, the Red and Blue have struggled against their City Line rival with a dismal 1-31 all-time record. Last season, the Hawks hosted Penn and nabbed a 62-51 win in the Quakers last Big 5 game of the season. Penn had found itself in a hole early,chipped away at that deficit in the second half, but ultimately conceded the game.
