PHILADELPHIA Big 5 basketball at The Palestra begins Wednesday night when the University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team opens its home schedule with a 7 p.m. tip-off against cross-town rival Villanova.
Despite being at home, the Quakers (0-1) pursuit of their first win of the season will not get any easier against the Wildcats (1-1). Villanova has won the last six meetings between the two teams and advanced to the third round of the WNIT last season.
If the Quakers wish to even their record, they will need to keep Villanova forward Laura Kurz in check. Kurz is averaging 19.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game, including 25 points and nine rebounds in Villanova’s win over Fairfield Saturday. Junior Maria Getty has been the team’s best long distance shooter, connecting on nearly half of her three point attempts through the first two games.
Penn was led by Carrie Biemer’s 15 points in the Quakers season-opening loss to Lehigh. Penn saw solid contributions from Kelly Scott and Jerin Smith. Scott joined Biemer in double-digits with ten points and Smith finished with eight points. Smith also led the team in rebounding with seven boards, while sophomore Erin Power had two steals and senior Katarina Lackner led the team with three assists.
