ITHACA, N.Y.--The Penn women's basketball team edged Cornell, 49-48, Saturday in Ithaca, N.Y.thanks to a double-double effort by Ashley Gray and 16 points from Lauren Pears.The Quakers improved to 9-13 on the season and 4-5 in the Ivy League. Cornell fell to 10-13 and 6-4 in the Ancient Eight.
The game came down to a Cornell in-bounding opportunity under their basket with just 2.5 seconds to play and the Big Red down one point. Senior Joey Rhoads swatted the ball on the throw in and Penn recovered it to hold on for the heart-pounding win.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Quakers.
Senior Gray exploded for nine points and eight rebounds in the second half and finished the game with a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds. Fellow senior Pearsscored 16 points in the game and grabbed three steals.
Monica Naltner had a quiet night on offense with four points, but snagged seven defensive rebounds.
The Quakers host their final home games of the season when Harvard and Dartmouth visit The Palestra, Feb. 23-24. Penn's four seniors--Gray, Naltner, Pears and Rhoads--will be honored on Senior Day, Feb. 24. The tip is set for 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday.
