PHILADELPHIA - With the addition of the first-year Charge for a Cure Initiative, the 2010-11 Penn women's basketball team raised more than $6,000 toward the fight against several diseases. In total, the $6,647 raised will be donated toward foundations for ALS, Lupus, Parkinson's, Breast Cancer and Cystic Fibrosis.
The Quakers collected $4,137 from 68 donors in the first year of the Charge for a Cure Initiative. Through raffle, t-shirt and ticket sales, the team raised another $2,010 with their annual Pink Zone game held on Feb. 12. The NCAA donated an additional $500 after the Quakers won the 'Pack the House' challenge.
Donors of Charge for a Cure pledged a donation for every offensive charge taken by the Quakers during the season. The initiative helped the Red and Blue on the court as they took a total of 53 charges this season - up from 34 in 2009-10. Donors included many members of the Penn Athletics Department, Penn Alumni, current athletes, members of the media and family and friends.
The charges were added up monthly with November's donations going toward the ALS Association of America, December's charges went toward the Lupus Foundation of America, January supported The Michael J. Fox Foundation (Parkinson’s Disease), February's proceeds go toward the Susan G. Komen Foundation (Breast Cancer) and March supports the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
"I think this has been a really great effort by so many people," head coach Mike McLaughlin said of the Charge for a Cure initiative. "The money is extremely helpful to the cause and its a great thing, but even more so is the awareness that this initiative brings toward these diseases. We are grateful to raise money for these causes, but we always felt the most important part of this initiative was about raising awareness. We hope this only continues to grow so that we have the opportunity to reach as many people as possible."
All of the proceeds from the Pink Zone game will be donated to Penn's Rena Rowan Breast Center at the Abramson Cancer Center.
A huge thank you to our donors!!
