PHILADELPHIA - Head Coach Mike McLaughlinmade an addition to the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball coaching staff on Tuesday. The Quakers officially welcomed Christine McCollumas the Director of Basketball Operations.
"Christine is an important addition to our staff," McLaughlin said. "She brings a wealth of basketball experience as a coach as well as extensive knowledge of her administrative role. I've had the privilege to know Christine for quite some time and I'm really excited for what she will add to this program."
"As a Philadelphia native, to have the opportunity to coach at The Palestra is a dream come true," McCollum said. "Coach McLaughlin has been a great mentor to me for nearly ten years now. He truly cares about his players on and off the court, and invests his time and energy to make sure they are successful well after graduation. He does things the right way, and he and his staff have created such a positive culture of hard work, passion and winning here at Penn. I can't wait to be a part of it."
McCollum, who will handle all administrative duties for the program,comes to Penn after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater Holy Family. During that time, the Tigers won a regular season and two conference tournament titles en route to two NCAA Division II Tournament appearances.
A native of Abington, Pa., McCollum played three seasons under Mike McLaughlin during her four-year playing career from 2006-2010. During that time, McCollum appeared in 130 games for the Tigers as the team went an impressive 117-13, including 77-0 in conference play. McCollum was a member of two of McLaughlin's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship teams (2007 & 2008) and made four NCAA Division II Tournament appearances. The Tigers advanced to the East Region Championship final twice during her career in 2008 and 2010.
McCollum was a three-time All-CACC selection and was also a three-time CACC All-Academic selection. She graduated from Holy Family in 2010 with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary/Special Education.
Penn is coming off a school record third-straight postseason appearance, where they reached the second round of the WNIT and finished with the third-most wins in school history at 21-9. The Quakers will return three starters, the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, the Ivy League Rookie of the Year, the Big 5 Coach of the Year and 10 letterwinners from that team.
The team recently announced a trip to Hawaii over the New Years holiday which includes a pair of games. The full schedule will be released later this summer.
