PHILADELPHIA - For the first WNIT game in school history, the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team will host Hofstra at The Palestra on Thursday. Game time is to be determined.
Penn (20-8, 11-3 Ivy)earned the Ivy League's automatic berth to the WNIT and clinched a school record third-straight postseason appearance (the Quakers reached the WBI in 2012-13 and the NCAA Tournament in 2013-14). This season, Penn won the program's first-ever Big 5 title and clinched back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in school history.
"I'm really proud of this group," said head coach Mike McLaughlin. "They have worked extremely hard to get to this point and earned the right to play in the postseason. This is a great opportunity for us and I know we are all excited to give our seniors another chance to put on the Penn uniform. They have accomplished so much over the past four years and have meant so much to the program. We're certainly looking forward to the challenge and the experience."
In the 2013 Women's Basketball Invitational, the Quakers won the first two postseason games in school history with home victories over Howard and Fairfield, but fell in the semifinals at Detroit. Last season, the Red and Blue led fifth-seeded Texas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by as many as 15 in the first half, including seven at halftime, but ultimately fell, 79-61.
Hofstra finished 20-12 this season and fell just six points short of the NCAA Tournament berth with a 62-56 loss to James Madison in the program's first-ever trip to the CAA Championship game. The Pride finished third in a competitive CAA conference and played two common opponents with the Quakers. Both teams defeated NJIT, but Penn lost at Drexel, while the Pride split two conference matchups with the Dragons.
The winner will face either Temple or Marsit. The Red Foxes host the Owls on Thursday in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
