PHILADELPHIA - Though the rest of the schedule is still getting ironed out, the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team is officially heading to Charlottesville, Va., for a matchup with ACC powerhouse Virginia on Jan. 16.
This will be the third meeting all-time with Virginia, but the first at John Paul Jones Arena. In the previous two encounters, the Cavaliers won handily. On Jan. 12, 1979, Penn fell 84-37 and on Nov. 27, 1993, Virginia won 92-66. Both of those games were played at the Cavaliers' previous facility of University Hall.
The Quakers will also be looking for their first-ever win over an ACC opponent. Overall, the Red and Blue are 0-8 against the powerhouse conference with losses to Duke and Wake Forest, and two losses apiece to Georgia Tech, Maryland and Virginia.
With every conference opponent to the North, this trip will also mark the furthest south the Quakers have traveled since playing in Elon, N.C., to open the 2007-08 campaign.
The remainder of the women's basketball schedule will be released later this month.
