PHILADELPHIA--The Penn women's basketball team will hope to snap a three-game skid Sunday against Loyola (Md.) at The Palestra. The Quakers (1-3) will also look to avenge last season's New Year's Eve loss to the Greyhounds (2-2). Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
The Red and Blue have been held to less than 50 points in both of the last two outings. Junior Carrie Biemer has been the leading scorer in all four games this season and is averaging 17.0 points per game. She has also been strong on the boards, with 4.0 rpg, though junior Maggie Burgess leads the Quakers with 4.8 per game.
The Greyhounds have been making the rounds in Philadelphia playing three of their four games against Philly teams, defeating Drexel and Villanova before dropping to La Salle this season. Leading the scoring and rebounding for Loyola is Vika Sholokhova with 13.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Erica DiClemente is the second-leading scorer with 10.8 points per game while Meghan Wood is averaging 6.0 boards per game. Wood is also dishing a team-high three assists per game.
Last season, Penn traveled to Reitz Arena in Baltimore, Md. and left with a stinging 75-63 loss. Part of the Quakers undoing last season was the stellar three-point shooting by the 'Hounds--a problem that has plagued Penn early this season as well.
The Quakers are 1-4 all-time against Loyola though the teams have met just once in the 2000s and played three games in the mid-ninties. Their one victory was a 62-54 decision at The Palestra in 1997.
