PHILADELPHIA - In its third season, the Charge for a Cure program raised another $2,000 for various charities. In addition to another $800 from their Pink Zone game, the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team raised nearly $3,000 in 2012-13.
Since head coach Mike McLaughlin took over in 2009-10, the program has raised $15,050 for various charities.
In four seasons, McLaughlin's Quakers have been extraordinarily active off the court in support of local, national and international causes. After three years, the "Charge for a Cure" initiative, has raised nearly $9,000, which is in addition to the $6,300 raised for breast cancer awareness and the 400-plus pairs of shoes collected in 2010 for Haitian citizens after the nation's devastating earthquake. The Quakers also adopted 13-year-old Emily Miccarelli, a brain cancer survivor, through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation for the 2009-10 season.
This year, the Quakers collected more than $2,000 from 37 donors in the third year of the Charge for a Cure initiative. Through raffle, t-shirt and ticket sales, the team raised another $800 with their annual Play 4 Kay "Pink Zone" game held on Feb. 16.
Donors of Charge for a Cure pledged a donation for every offensive charge taken by the Quakers during the season. The initiative helped the Red and Blue on the court as they took a total of 45 charges this season en route to the first two postseason wins in program history. Donors included many members of the Penn Athletics Department, Penn Alumni, current athletes, members of the media and family and friends.
The charges were added up monthly with November's donations going toward the Michael J. Fox Foundation (Parkinson's Disease), December's charges went toward Go4theGoal (Pediatric Cancer), January supported the American Cancer Society, February's proceeds went toward the Dave Bryan Ride On Fund (ALS) and March supported Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of America.
A huge thank you to our 2012-13 Charge for a Cure donors!!
