Women's Crew Coach Barb Kirch Grudt To Leave Penn

PHILADELPHIA - University of Pennsylvania Women's Crew Coach Barb Kirch Grudt has decided to leave Penn after nine years.

"After much discussion about the direction of the program and Barb's own personal goals, we mutually decided that the time was right for her to pursue other career interests" said Penn Director of Athletics Steve Bilsky. "She was the consummate professional in her position. Barb has had a great deal of success in her past, and we wish her the very best in the future."

A former Penn rower and 1984 graduate, Grudt served a nine-year stint as head coach at Dartmouth College from 1988 to 1997 before she returned to her alma mater.

"It has been a privilege to coach at Penn these past nine year,” she said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the athletes in the program and wish them the very best next season and in the future."

Grudt also served as head coach of the United States Junior National Team from 1996 to 1999. Prior to that, she rowed for the U.S. twice in the Olympic Games, in 1984 (Los Angeles) and 1988 (Seoul, Korea). In 2000 she was the USRowing Development Coach of the Year.
